New MICROLINE 321/321  Sequel to World’s Most Popular Dot Matrix Forms Printer

MT. LAUREL, N.J., July 29, 1981 -- Okidata today introduced the MICROLINE 321/321 , an advanced dot matrix printer that accommodates multi-part forms and stock up to twice the thickness of standard dot matrix printers.

The newest upgrade to the ML321/321 (introduced in 1988), the world's most popular dot matrix printer, the ML321/321  easily runs twice as long as most printers in its class, providing users with dedicated forms printing in the most demanding point-of-sale, automation and utility applications.

According to CAP Ventures, more than 81 billion pages were printed by dot matrix printers in the U.S. in 1995. They are essential printers for point-of-sale terminals that need reliable printers for frequent printing of documents on demand, accounting/finance departments that print multipart forms and perform long, unattended printer runs and factory floors that have harsh environments and airborne pollutants.


The ML321/321  builds on the heritage of Tank Tough reliability established by Okidata’s previous lines of dot matrix printers, said Patrick Steffen, vice president and general manager. No matter what your needs are for forms printing in environments ranging from day-in and day-out to harsh, the ML321/321  can handle them. It will replace its predecessor as the world's most popular dot matrix printer.

The ML321/321 's 9-pin printhead enables it to print razor-sharp images for a 200-million character life, twice as long as any other dot matrix printer on the market. Made of a lightweight samarium cobalt magnet and powerful spring-activated pins, the 9-pin printhead clearly prints through on all pages of multi-part forms. A patented optical sensor accurately positions the printhead on every page, ensuring that output is precisely formed.

Greater Paper-Handling Flexibility

With an expanded head gap, the ML321/321  can accommodate multi-part forms and stock up to twice as thick as other dot matrix printers. Using the optional pull or push tractor and the bottom feed feature, the ML321/321  maintains a short and straight paper path to easily run stiff card stocks or labels. Additionally, the new auto-tear feature accurately positions continuous forms for clean tears at the perforation -- eliminating wasted forms.


The ML321/321  includes two resident fonts -- Courier and Gothic, plus NLQ, utility, high speed draft and super speed draft for any printing need. It also has eight scaleable resident bar codes, including: Code 39, UPC A, UPC E, EAN 8, EAN 13, Interleaved 2 of 5, Code 128 (A, B, C) and PostNet. The ML321/321  is PostNet certified by the United States Postal Service.

Advanced Technology

The ML321/321  has a motor that is lighter, stronger and more efficient, reducing friction, heat build-up and wear. The rack and pinion drive system maintains accuracy longer than belt or cable systems, giving users better print quality over time. And the entire printer is protected from the harsh environments by a rugged UV coated impact resistant cabinet.

Pricing and Other Features

The ML321/321  is Windows 95 and Plug and Play compatible. It has 64K RAM and a receive buffer of 28K, enabling long, unattended print runs. It comes with a one year warranty on parts, labor and printhead.

The MTBF is 10,000 hours, one of the longest in the industry. The printhead has a life of 200 million characters at 25% duty cycle.


Okidata’s ML321  dot matrix printers are certified with the ISO-9002 international quality standard and are compatible with Novell Netware.

With a footprint of 15.7x13.6x4.6 for the ML321  and 21.7x13.6x4.6 for the ML321 , the ML321/321  can easily fit where the ML321 printer was used, or in any location.
